2009 marked the 150th anniversary of the death of the great railway engineer Robert Stephenson, who designed and constructed the iconic Royal Border Bridge, a 28-arch viaduct spanning the River Tweed at Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland. 

The animated lighting in this work is one of a number of related installations connected to transport infrastructure, which utilise movement to reflect the transient nature of the traffic which uses it. The work has also been set up in a manner to allow input from other lighting artists and community interest groups, unlocking potential for future re-invention.
