Housing at Cathay street, Glasgow

We delivered 54 new homes for rent for Glasgow Housing Association on a challenging brownfield site in Milton, bounded by Cathay Street, Raasay Street and Scaraway Street. The development provides 16 cottage flats (including 8 wheelchair-accessible homes) and 38 two- and three-bedroom terraced family houses, meeting a broad spectrum of housing needs. Our role encompassed Architect, Landscape Designer, and Lead Consultant — continuing into delivery following novation to the main contractor.

The project emerged from a wider masterplanning exercise for Milton, where DO-Architecture worked with Glasgow Housing Association to examine the phased regeneration of derelict and brownfield sites across the area. This masterplan identified four key sites with potential to deliver over 200 new mixed-tenure homes. This first phase was selected for social rent housing and has since become the foundation for the next stage of regeneration: a second phase, already on site, which continues with the same design team to ensure clarity and cohesion across the wider plan.

Designed to Housing for Varying Needs and Secured by Design standards, the homes are also built to Silver Standard Active, combining a fabric-first approach with in-line photovoltaics, supported by our in-house Section 6 Certification. This ensures that the new homes not only deliver high-quality design but also meet demanding energy and sustainability benchmarks, reducing costs for tenants and supporting long-term resilience.

The Milton projects highlight our expertise in masterplanning, brownfield regeneration, and the delivery of high-quality, sustainable social housing — areas where we continue to support housing associations and local authorities across Scotland.
