west pier

Location: Brighton, England

Stage: Completed

Established in 1866 as a ‘pleasure pier’, The West Pier brought tourists from all over to the city of Brighton. The pier eventually closed in 1975 and subsequently fell into disrepair. The pier gradually collapsed during the early 21st century with major sections collapsing in late 2002. Two fires in March and May 2003 left little of the original structure remaining a it was declared to be beyond repair allowing further structural damage from storms to occur since.

During the period of work on the adjacent i360 and i360 Landscape projects, DO were also appointed by Marks Barfield Architects to provide feature lighting to the West Pier, in order to highlight the relationship between the old pier and new tower and to remember the first Grade I listed pier in the UK.
